Wild mustangs in the Sonoran Desert are most famously represented by the Salt River wild horse herd, which roams the lower Salt River corridor within the Tonto National Forest in Arizona. Many believe these horses descend from Spanish colonial livestock brought to the Southwest by explorers and missionaries like Father Kino, while others trace local populations back to 19th-century settlers and Indigenous herds.
